ECOBANA -Sea Turtle Preservation and Release in Barra de Navidad

The following information and pictures are provided by Ecological Bahia de Navidad Group "ECOBANA".

On November 24 and 27th,  2010, is the expected  hatching of two sea turtle nests with an amount estimated of 300 turtles of the "golfina" species in the Barra de Navidad Tortugario located in the Malecon.

Today ,Wednesday November 24th., 80 baby turtles were born this morning and will be released at 7:00 pm in the Barra de Navidad Malecon.

The activities and programs for the preservation of the sea turtle by ECOBANA group are located in the Tortugario in the Barra de Navidad malecon. ECOBANA group has a nesting area where the sea turtle eggs are transplanted from the original nests of the marine sea turtles that arrive to the Barra de Navidad Bay during the moon effects starting in July through Novemember.

The marine sea turtle in Barra de Navidad is of the "golfina" species; it is one of the 7 different species that arrives to  Mexican coasts and is in danger of extinction.  The turtle delivers 97 to 110 eggs with an incubation period of 45 days. After the baby turtle comes out of the egg, it takes it 2 to 3 days to emerge to the surface in a process known as eclotion.

The baby turtles are released at night with the participation of children, young people and tourists who visit Costalegre as a means of teaching them of the preservation of the marine sea turtle.

Other activities where visitors can participate are surveillance, where there can be the opportunity to observe a sea turtle laying their eggs.

ECOBANA Group is formed by a group of volunteers who don't receive any salary or payment. Voluntary donations either economical or of equipment by the assistants to this and any other events will help Grupo ECOBANA to pay expenses and equipment generated to support this program. Donations for today's event will help to complete the payment of a Speaker.
